Our suggestion: half a day or moreMedieval villageSainte-Suzanne-et-Chammes

Why discover Sainte-Suzanne?

Sainte-Suzanne is a medieval village in Mayenne, listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. It makes a rewarding excursion from Laval to discover another side of the department, with ramparts, narrow streets and architectural heritage.

The village developed beneath the keep and its fortifications. Its medieval appearance does not mean everything dates from the Middle Ages: the buildings also reflect later centuries. This mixture makes the walk interesting. Rather than looking for a setting frozen in time, notice how the houses and streets have changed.

Start with the narrow streets and ramparts

We suggest exploring the village on foot first. The streets are narrow and steep: keep a relaxed pace and wear comfortable shoes. Look at the façades, passages and viewpoints before heading to the castle.

Allow half a day as a starting point, and longer if you want to visit the interiors, have lunch there or add a walk. This is our suggestion, not an officially timed route. For particular mobility needs, ask about the route and suitable access before setting off.

Visit the castle and understand the area

The castle combines a Romanesque keep with a residence built from 1607. The Centre d’interprétation de l’architecture et du patrimoine, or CIAP, introduces the area’s cultural and natural heritage. The visit takes you beyond simply looking at the façades.

The Department’s official page brings together opening hours, prices and visit formats. Opening times change with the seasons: check your date rather than relying on hours found in an old article. As of 19 September 2026, the Department’s website reports that the keep is inaccessible pending works. Check its news before setting off. Self-guided discovery materials and family activities are also listed.

Extend your day around the village

If you would like to walk further, consult the routes offered by the Coëvrons Tourist Office. The castle notably mentions exploring the village of La Rivière and the surrounding area. Choose a specific route to suit your time, elevation changes and your group’s preferences.

For lunch in the village, book a table if you have somewhere in mind. Picnics are not permitted in the castle courtyard; the official website directs visitors to the Parc de la Butte Verte. Planning your break before the visit is the best way to keep the day enjoyable.

  • Check castle and activity opening times for your chosen date.
  • Choose where to park before entering the village streets.
  • Plan your journey from Laval according to your means of transport.
  • Allow extra time for the return journey and your welcome at the house.

Stay in Laval and explore Mayenne

You can devote a day to Laval and another part of your stay to Sainte-Suzanne. This lets you alternate between town, village and countryside without changing accommodation. The included breakfast at Chez Patou is the first appointment of the day, from 7 am to 10 am.

On your return, enjoy your room and the house’s shared spaces. If this excursion falls on the first day of your stay, simply plan your arrival in advance: Patricia welcomes you from 6 pm. For a particular request, contact the house before your visit.
